Since its inception in 2008, Google’s Chrome browse has cut out its own niche in the browser after having eclipsed long time favorite Internet Explorer as the most popular browser in the world. Google Chrome is a free web browser that sets out to redefine browser functionality. It now enjoys just under 33% of the market share.
Google Chrome is very much a minimalist browser and switching over from Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox takes some getting used to. A lot of the features and buttons that one has come to expect from a browser are either missing from Chrome or have been reworked. For instance, default buttons on the interface include a refresh button as well as
buttons for going back, forward and entering the menu. A direct result of this minimalism is that there is a lot more screen real estate devoted to displaying the page rather than displaying the browser.
Additionally, there is no drop down menu in the address bar from which users can select an internet address. Past sites are stored, however, and are available when you start typing. Also there is no separate search bar built into the browser as there are in Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer. While users can search the internet directly from the address bar in these browsers, the search bar has been reserved for website-specific searches. However, Google Chrome has eliminated the need for the search bar by allowing domain-specific searching right from the address bar itself. This is not a terrible decision but it means that the user has extra typing to do rather than selecting a search provider from the drop down menu.
One of the best things about Google Chrome is the vast array of extensions that a user can install on their browser. Mozilla Firefox pioneered the extensible browser and Google has since perfected it. A tremendous amount of app development on the Android and Chrome OS platforms has had a ripple effect for Chrome extension development as well. The Chrome Web Store hosts thousands of downloadable extensions to help improve productivity and the usability of Google Chrome.
One of the issues with Google Chrome is the large amount of system resources it requires. This is especially true when there are a large number of tabs open. Each tab is treated as a separate browser and too many can cause your computer to crawl.
Despite this drawback, Google Chrome is a speedy, able browser. It has become more stable in recent years and it is now wonder that it has grabbed the top spot from Internet Explorer.
